Custom business software built in Coimbatore typically costs about ₹2 lakh to ₹35 lakh, based on the planning ranges Technox publishes for Indian web application projects, with mobile apps priced separately. A focused internal tool or first version (MVP) typically sits around ₹2 lakh to ₹6 lakh, a business application with several user roles and integrations around ₹6 lakh to ₹15 lakh, and a larger platform from ₹15 lakh upwards. On top of the build, budget 18% GST, hosting, and maintenance of roughly 15% to 20% of the build cost every year.
Start with one question, because it can save the whole budget: could an existing product do this for less? For ten users, three years of a ready-made ERP can cost a fraction of a custom build, as the worked example below shows. Custom software pays off when your process does not fit a product, when user numbers make per-user fees expensive, or when the software itself gives you an edge over competitors.
This guide is about software: business applications, ERP and CRM systems, integrations and mobile apps. If you need a website, read our separate guide to website development cost in Coimbatore. Technox builds custom software in Coimbatore, so the planning ranges in this guide are our own, and we have shown where they come from.
Software development cost in Coimbatore by type of project
The type of software decides the budget more than anything else. These planning ranges come from Technox's published cost guides for Indian projects and assume a clear scope and standard technology.
Expect to land near the lower end of a band when requirements are settled before work starts, and near the top when they are still being worked out. A custom ERP for a manufacturer usually falls in the business application or complex platform band, depending on how many departments it covers and how many systems it connects to.
Why software quotes in Coimbatore can differ by ten times
If you have collected quotes, you have probably seen a wide spread. That spread is normal across the industry. Published ranges for a custom CRM alone run from ₹75,000 at a Karur software firm (Redpulse Software, June 2026) to ₹50 lakh in a national cost guide (Codingclave, October 2026). Both can be honest. They are describing different products under the same name.
Four things usually explain the gap:
Scope. One quote may cover contacts and follow-ups for three staff. Another may cover sales, service, dealer access and reporting for fifty.
What is included? Some quotes leave out discovery, testing, deployment, documentation, training or support. Ask for a line-by-line breakdown before comparing totals.
Who builds it? A freelancer, a small studio and a company with project managers and testers price very differently. Our comparison of a freelancer vs a web development company explains the trade-offs.
Template or custom. Some low quotes adapt an existing product or template. That can be a good deal, but you should know whether you will own the code or rent a configured product.
What you are paying for: Coimbatore's cost base
Most of a software quote is people's time, so salaries and office costs shape the price. Coimbatore's costs are meaningfully lower than Bengaluru's, which is one reason local quotes can be lower for the same scope.
The salary rows compare like with like within each source. The rent row mixes two sources with different methods, so treat it as a rough guide. Knight Frank puts Chennai at ₹75 per sq ft per month for the same period.
On both salary sources, Coimbatore pay is about 61% to 62% of Bengaluru pay for the same role. That gap reaches clients through lower day rates, though how much of it a firm passes on depends on its overheads, seniority mix and margin.
The talent is not thin either. A July 2025 CBRE and CII report found Coimbatore already hosts over 60 global capability centres employing more than 75,000 professionals (CBRE). Lower cost here does not have to mean lower skill, but it does mean you should check the experience of the people who will actually work on your project.
Buy, build or both: a three-year cost example
Before you approve any build, compare it with what an existing product would cost over the same period. Here is a worked example for a business that needs ERP-style software for ten users.
At ten users, buying is far cheaper, provided the product fits how you work. The numbers move as you grow. The same Zoho plan for 50 users costs about ₹21.2 lakh over three years including GST, which is in the range of a mid-sized custom build. Per-user pricing rewards small teams; one-time builds start to make sense as user numbers grow or when no product fits your process.
Many Coimbatore businesses end up with a mix: a ready product for accounting, such as TallyPrime, which costs ₹22,500 for a single-user licence or ₹67,500 for multi-user, plus 18% GST (Tally Solutions), and custom software for the part of the business that is unique, connected to it. If you are weighing this choice for the first time, our software development guide for businesses covers the build or buy decision in more detail.
Costs that sit outside the development quote
The build price is rarely the whole bill. These costs are real, regular, and often left out of quotes.
GST
Software development is taxed at 18% GST in India, charged as 9% central and 9% state tax on intra-state supplies, and the rate for IT design and development services was not changed when GST rates were restructured from 22 September 2025 (Busy). The government's service classification lists IT design and development services under SAC 998314 and IT consulting and support services under SAC 998313 (CBIC). If your business is GST-registered, ask for a proper tax invoice so you can claim input tax credit.
Hosting and infrastructure
Most business software today runs on cloud servers billed by the hour. As one reference point, an Amazon Web Services t3.medium server (2 virtual CPUs, 4 GiB memory) running Linux in the Mumbai region costs $0.0448 an hour on demand, or about $33 a month if it runs continuously (AWS price list, October 2026). Databases, backups, storage, monitoring and data transfer are charged on top, and costs rise with usage.
App store fees
Mobile apps carry their own fees. Google Play charges a one-time US$25 developer registration fee (Google Play Console Help), and the Apple Developer Program costs US$99 per membership year (Apple). Register both accounts in your company's name, not the developer's.
Maintenance and support
Software needs security updates, bug fixes and small changes for as long as you use it. Technox's planning figure is 15% to 20% of the build cost each year for web applications, and 15% to 25% for mobile apps, plus hosting and third-party fees. Agree what the annual maintenance contract (AMC) covers in writing: updates, backups, monitoring, response times and a set number of hours for changes.
Changes and contingency
Software estimates tend to run over. A University of Oslo thesis reviewing estimation research found that 60% to 80% of software projects overran their estimated effort, by 30% to 40% on average (Moløkken-Østvold, 2004). The research is older and not specific to small Indian projects, but the lesson holds: keep a contingency, and agree in advance how change requests are priced. Holding back 15% to 20% of the build budget for changes you will only discover once you see the software working is a sensible starting point.
Fixed price, time and materials or a dedicated team?
How you pay changes who carries the risk.
For most first-time software buyers in Coimbatore, a short paid discovery phase followed by a fixed price for a first version works well. Discovery turns a vague idea into a written scope that any vendor can price, which also makes quotes comparable.
How to get an accurate quote
A quote can only be as accurate as the brief behind it. These steps cut the spread between quotes and the risk of surprises later.
List the users and what each needs to do, such as sales staff entering orders, managers approving them and dealers checking status.
List every system the software must connect to, such as Tally, Zoho, a payment gateway, WhatsApp or a government portal.
Describe the exceptions, not just the normal process. Exceptions are where development time goes.
Ask each vendor for a breakdown by phase (discovery, design, development, testing, deployment), with named roles and hours.
Check what is excluded: GST, hosting, licences, data migration, training, documentation and support after launch.
Confirm ownership: the code repository, hosting and app store accounts in your company's name, and copyright in the code assigned to you in writing.
For the full list of questions to put to any vendor, see what to ask before hiring a web development company. Most of them apply equally to software projects.
After launch: what the software keeps costing
The first year after launch tells you whether the budget was realistic. Expect three recurring lines: hosting, which grows with users and data; maintenance under your AMC; and new features, which most businesses want within months of going live. Keep a single list of change requests, review it every quarter, and approve work in batches rather than one small change at a time. If the software ever needs to move to a new vendor or a new server, collect the code, database, documentation and every account login before the relationship ends.

Frequently asked questions
How much does custom software cost in Coimbatore?
Based on Technox's published planning ranges, most custom business software costs about ₹2 lakh to ₹35 lakh to build, with mobile apps priced separately. A focused tool or MVP is typically ₹2 lakh to ₹6 lakh, a business application with several roles and integrations ₹6 lakh to ₹15 lakh, and a larger platform ₹15 lakh and above. Add 18% GST, hosting and yearly maintenance.
Is software development cheaper in Coimbatore than in Bengaluru?
The cost base is lower. Average software engineer pay in Coimbatore is about 61% to 62% of Bengaluru pay on both Indeed and PayScale, and available office rent data puts Coimbatore at roughly half of Bengaluru. How much of that saving appears in a quote depends on the firm.
How much does ERP software cost for a small business in India?
A ready-made cloud ERP is priced per user. Zoho ERP Standard, for example, costs ₹999 per user per month billed annually, before GST, with a minimum of five users. A custom ERP is a one-time build plus yearly maintenance, and usually costs more for small teams but can make sense as user numbers grow or when no product fits your process.
What is the GST rate on software development?
Software development services are taxed at 18% GST in India. IT design and development services fall under SAC 998314, and IT consulting and support services under SAC 998313.
How much does software maintenance cost each year?
A common planning figure is 15% to 20% of the original build cost each year for web applications and 15% to 25% for mobile apps, plus hosting and third-party fees. The exact amount depends on what the maintenance contract covers.
How long does it take to develop custom software?
A focused tool usually takes 4 to 8 weeks, a business application 2 to 4 months, and a complex platform 4 to 8 months. Clear requirements and quick decisions shorten the timeline more than anything else.
Why are software quotes so different from each other?
Quotes differ because they describe different scopes, include different things, come from different kinds of teams, and sometimes adapt existing products rather than building from scratch. Ask every vendor for a line-by-line breakdown against the same written brief before comparing prices.
Should I choose a fixed price or time and materials?
Choose a fixed price for small, clearly defined projects, and time and materials when requirements will change as you go. Many first-time buyers do best with a short paid discovery phase followed by a fixed price for the first version.
