Offshore software development means hiring a team in another country, usually one with lower costs, to design, build, test or maintain your software. It works best when you keep ownership of the product and the code, agree in writing how the team will work across time zones, put data protection and IP terms in the contract, and plan from the start how you would take the work back or move it elsewhere. Cost is the reason most businesses start. Control is what decides whether it works. Start with one question, because it settles more offshore projects than any other: who on your side will own the product and review the work? If you have someone who can set priorities, answer questions and check what is delivered each week, an offshore team can work well. If nobody on your side has that time, offshoring will move the problem rather than solve it. This guide is written for businesses in the US, UK, Australia, Southeast Asia and the Gulf who are considering an offshore development partner, particularly in India. Technox is a software company in Coimbatore, India, with an office in Kuala Lumpur, so we are one of the options you might compare. We have tried to say plainly where offshoring is the wrong choice. The three terms describe how far your development team is from you, which mostly decides cost and how much of the working day you share. "Offshore" depends on where you sit. A company in Dubai working with a team in India shares most of its working day, while a company in New York shares almost none of it. The time-zone section below shows the actual overlap for each region. Outsourcing is not shrinking, but buyers have become more selective. In Deloitte's 2024 Global Outsourcing Survey of more than 500 executives, 80% planned to keep or increase spending on third-party outsourcing, and 83% said they already use AI as part of their outsourced services. At the same time, 70% said they had brought some previously outsourced work back in-house over the past five years (Deloitte). Businesses are not choosing between offshore and in-house any more. They are deciding which work belongs where. Demand for outside technology services remains strong. ISG's index of technology services contracts in the Americas reached a record $65.9 billion in annual contract value for 2025, up 25% on 2024 (ISG, January 2026). The cost gap is still the main reason. The median US software developer earned $135,980 in May 2025, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). In the UK, the provisional 2026 median for full-time programmers and software development professionals is £59,863 a year (ONS, ASHE Table 14). In Coimbatore, India, average pay advertised for software engineers is about ₹6.35 lakh a year, as shown in our software development cost guide for Coimbatore. Salaries are not day rates, because a vendor adds project management, testing, tools, offices and margin, but the gap explains why offshore quotes are lower. India's software export base is large and concentrated on English-speaking markets. The Reserve Bank of India's survey put India's software and IT-enabled services exports at $204.7 billion in 2024-25, up 7.3%. The US took 52.9% of those exports and Europe 32.8%, and 72% were invoiced in US dollars (RBI, November 2025). NASSCOM estimates Indian technology exports at $246 billion for 2025-26, using a broader industry measure (NASSCOM, February 2026). The two figures use different definitions and years, so they are not directly comparable. Most buyers think first of Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune or Chennai. Cities such as Coimbatore offer lower costs, with software engineer pay at roughly 61% to 62% of Bengaluru levels and office rents around half, according to the data in our Coimbatore cost guide. Whichever city you choose, check the experience of the people who will actually work on your project, not just the size of the company. How you engage an offshore team decides who manages the work, who carries the risk, and how easily you can change course. Most small and mid-sized buyers start with a fixed-price first version or a small dedicated team, then expand once trust is established. Our guide to software development for businesses covers the stages a project moves through, whichever model you choose. India Standard Time is UTC+5:30 and does not change for daylight saving, so overlap with Europe, the US and Australia shifts twice a year. This table assumes the Indian team works 9:30 to 18:30 IST and your team works 9:00 to 18:00 local time. For US clients, a standard Indian working day gives no shared hours at all. That can still work, but only if it is planned: either part of the Indian team works a shifted day that overlaps your morning, or the work runs on written handovers, with your questions answered overnight. Agree the number of overlap hours and who covers them in the contract, not in the sales meeting. Most offshore problems become legal problems only when the contract was vague. Five terms deserve particular care. IP assignment. The contract should assign copyright in all code, designs and documentation to your company, in writing, for the full term and worldwide. In India, copyright in work made by a contractor stays with the author unless it is assigned in writing; our comparison of a freelancer vs a web development company explains the Indian rules. Code and account ownership. Your code repository, cloud accounts, domains and app store accounts should sit in your company's name from the first day, with the vendor added as a user. Named people. Name the key team members in the contract, and require your approval before anyone is replaced. Governing law and disputes. Agree which country's law applies and how disputes are resolved. Arbitration is common for cross-border contracts. India has been party to the New York Convention on enforcing foreign arbitral awards since 1960, applying it to awards made in other member countries and to disputes treated as commercial under Indian law, and the US, UK, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore and the UAE are all members too (UNCITRAL). Exit terms. Set out what the vendor must hand over if the contract ends: code, documentation, credentials, and a defined period of knowledge-transfer support. For a fuller list of questions to put to any vendor before signing, see what to ask before hiring a web development company. If your offshore team will see personal data about customers, patients or employees, your own country's data protection law follows that data. The rules differ by region, and in most of them you remain responsible for what the vendor does. The practical steps are the same everywhere. Give the offshore team only the data it needs, use anonymised or test data where possible, sign a data processing agreement, and ask how access is controlled and logged. Ask for evidence of security practices, such as ISO/IEC 27001 certification or a SOC 2 report. SOC 2 reports are based on the AICPA's trust services criteria, of which security is the one every report must cover (Secureframe). Two Indian rules shape how an Indian vendor invoices you and when it expects to be paid. First, Indian GST. A supply counts as an export of services when the supplier is in India, the customer and the place of supply are outside India, payment is received in convertible foreign exchange (or rupees where the RBI permits), and the two parties are not branches of the same entity (CBIC Circular 202/14/2023). Exports are zero-rated under section 16 of the IGST Act. A registered supplier can either export under a letter of undertaking (LUT) without paying integrated GST, or pay integrated GST and claim it back as a refund (IGST Act, section 16). Ask your vendor whether it has a current LUT. If it does, its export invoices to you should not carry Indian GST. Second, payment timing. From 1 October 2026, Indian exporters of services must realise payment within nine months, down from fifteen, or twelve months for invoices in rupees (SCC Online). For services, the period runs from the invoice date (India Briefing). Expect vendors to ask for payment terms that fit comfortably inside that window. Milestone payments tied to working software you can see protect both sides. Your own country's tax rules, such as any withholding tax on cross-border service payments, also apply. Check those with your accountant before the first invoice. AI tools are now common in outsourced delivery, and they cut both ways. The Deloitte survey above found 83% of executives already use AI in their outsourced services. Faster code generation means routine work costs less, but it also means a team can hand you code that nobody on it understands. In one Hacker News thread in 2026, a buyer described an offshore developer replying with pasted AI output and wrote: "I don't even think these guys are running the code to test it, let alone read it" (Hacker News). Some in the industry argue that this changes the offshore model itself. Writing on DEV in March 2026, Sebastian Chedal argued that AI erodes the advantage of cheap hourly labour and pushes vendors to sell outcomes instead: "It does not make labor cheaper. It makes certain categories of labor unnecessary" (DEV Community). For a buyer, three practical rules follow: Ask how AI-generated code is reviewed, tested and approved before it reaches you. Agree which AI tools may be used with your code and data, especially if the data is personal or confidential. Pay for working software and agreed outcomes, not hours alone. A short, structured selection process saves months later. Six steps work for most buyers. Write a brief: the problem, the users, the systems to connect, and what "done" means for the first version. Shortlist three vendors and ask each for two references from clients in your region, ideally ones who have worked with them for more than a year. Run a paid trial: a small piece of real work over two to four weeks, delivered into your own repository. Meet the people who will actually work on your project, not just the sales team. Check the contract terms above: IP, accounts, named people, governing law, data protection and exit. Agree the working rhythm: overlap hours, a weekly demo, a shared task board and a named point of contact on each side. Offshore relationships rarely fail in the first month. They drift. A weekly demo of working software, a monthly review of quality and cost, and a written log of decisions keep both sides honest. Plan the exit while things are going well. Whether you later bring the work in-house, move to another vendor, or take over the team under a build-operate-transfer agreement, the same handover list applies: Code in your repository, with a clear history of changes Architecture notes and a guide to setting up the system from scratch All credentials, cloud accounts and third-party services in your name Test suites and deployment scripts that someone new can run A defined period of handover support, such as four to eight weeks of shared work If the project includes a public website and the move changes its platform or address, protect its search traffic with our website migration SEO checklist. Technox Technologies is a custom software development company in Coimbatore, India, with a second office at 1 Sentral in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The team builds web applications, mobile apps, ERP and CRM systems and API integrations. If you are comparing offshore partners, book a call and bring your brief, your preferred working hours and your data protection requirements. If offshoring is not right for your project, we will say so. Offshore software development is the practice of hiring a team in another, usually lower-cost, country to design, build, test or maintain software. The team may deliver a fixed project, work as a dedicated team on your product, or join your own developers as extra staff. Nearshore teams are in a nearby country, usually one to three hours apart, so you share most of the working day. Offshore teams are further away, often four or more hours apart, which usually lowers cost but reduces shared working hours. It can be, if someone on your side owns the product and reviews the work, and if the contract covers IP, data protection and exit terms. Deloitte's 2024 survey found 80% of executives planned to keep or increase outsourcing spend, but 70% had also brought some work back in-house, so the key is choosing which work to send offshore. A standard 9:30 to 18:30 IST day gives no overlap with a 9 to 6 day in New York or Los Angeles, three to four hours with Sydney, and four to five hours with London, depending on daylight saving. Kuala Lumpur and Singapore share six hours and Dubai eight. Ownership depends on the contract. Make sure it assigns copyright in all code, designs and documentation to your company in writing, and keep the code repository and cloud accounts in your company's name from the first day. Not if the vendor exports under a letter of undertaking (LUT). Services that meet India's export conditions are zero-rated, and a registered vendor with an LUT can supply them without paying integrated GST; without one, it pays the tax and claims a refund. Ask your vendor which route it uses. Your own country's tax rules on cross-border payments still apply. Most small businesses do best with a fixed-price first version or a small dedicated team managed by the vendor. Staff augmentation suits companies that already have strong engineering leadership in-house. Share only the data the team needs, use anonymised or test data where possible, sign a data processing agreement that meets your own country's law, and ask for evidence of security practices such as ISO/IEC 27001 certification or a SOC 2 report.Offshore, nearshore and onshore: what each means
